5/28/05 -  Spruce Run gave it his all today in finishing a game second in the G3 Red Bank Handicap at Monmouth Park. The turf was rated soft after the rains all week but the track officials kept the one mile event on the grass with the rail set 30 feet off the hedge. Spruce took the lead shortly after the start and went through relatively slow fractions until he was engaged in the final turn before reaching the stretch. He put away Midnight Express and kept the lead until headed by the eventual winner, American Freedom, at the 1-16th pole. He fought back and was gaining on the winner as they crossed the finish line only to lose by a neck. He galloped out strongly under Jose Ferrer, who has clearly returned to his old form when matched with Spruce. The effort by Spruce gave all of us at GDS the confidence that he can still run with the best of them at the age of seven. Over the years, he has proved that he loves the Monmouth turf, firm or soft, with its tight turns and we're looking forward to his next start and another successful season. The full chart is provided below.

AMERICAN FREEDOM was roughed on the heels of rivals into the opening turn, rated off the pace toward mid track, started his drive five wide leaving the quarter pole then dug in gamely to maintain a slight edge. SPRUCE RUN rated the pace inside, dug in gamely through the stretch, yielded to the winner the final sixteenth but held fast in place. ROYAL AFFIRMED rated just off the pace inside, dueled close from the top of the stretch, just lasted for show but appeared sore and had to be vanned off. BIG BOOSTER was shuffled back early, settled into stride toward the inside, lacked room through the upper stretch, eased out a sixteenth away and finished in full stride. REMIND steadied early, rated off the pace outside, gave chase four wide on the final turn, dueled through the stretch but yielded the closing yards. COTTAGE (ARG) rated back toward mid track, came widest on the final turn, closed to late stretch then leveled off approaching the wire. MIDNIGHT EXPRESS rated just off the pace and off the rail, contested three wide and between horses on the final turn then weakened into the stretch. TREFINITY was unhurried and offered no rally.

12/22/04 -  Spruce Run breezed 5 furlongs today on the Palm Meadows Trng Ctr turf course in 1:03 2/5. This was his second breeze in preparation for his Florida winter campaign at Gulfstream Park which opens in January. He is being pointed toward The Lure Stakes on January 15, 2005. This is a 7 1/2 furlong turf event with a guaranteed purse of $ 60,000. He returned to training after Thanksgiving at Indian Prairie Ranch and was shipped to Palm Meadows a few weeks later. If he continues to work well he should be ready for the Lure Stakes.

12/18/04 -  Bold Leadership and Tapalong both raced commendably at Calder Race Course today. In the third race which was a MSW going 6 furlongs, Tapalong broke alertly and battled between horses for the lead for the first half before fading down the stretch which could be expected for his first race. He finished fourth. See the chart below for the details.

Bold Leadership moved up to the Allowance ranks after his maiden victory at the Meadowlands and tackled some pretty formidable opposition in the seventh race. He broke slowly again but quickly caught up with the field and raced evenly in the 7 furlong event without urging down the stretch to finish a respectable 5th in the 12 horse field. See the chart below for the details.

3 Forever Zam: well back, no bid

Footnotes

HOLE IN THE HEAD saved ground just off the pace for the opening five furlongs, moved to four wide for the stretch drive and was then kept to his task. WAR PLAN was well rated while showing little early speed, began a drive towards the middle going, was five wide coming out of the far turn and finished as second best. FLOWER ALLEY out quickly to set a pressured pace from the inside, outlasted foe in the duel but was used up at the end. TAPALONG pressed the pace from between horses then did not have enough at the end. JUST LEAVEIT TO ME battled for the lead while racing three abreast and faded in the stretch. AILEEN'S PRIDE was outrun early then passed tiring foes. FOREVER ZAM raced from well back most way then had no bid. JACKSONIAN was through early.

Footnotes

VINOTECH moved up along the rail to press the pace, took over the lead around the far turn, was challenged shortly after by TEPEXPAN, and prevailed after a prolonged stretch duel. TEPEXPAN moved up to stalk the pace shortly after the break, was three wide though the backstretch, drifted four wide into the lane, moved in to engage VINOTECH in the upper stretch and was unable to get by that one. KOPPER KILGOAR was away quickly to duel with LUCKY FROLIC from early on, gave ground after a quarter, then rallied in the stretch to hold show. DO RUN RUN was taken back shortly after the break, raced from well behind most of the way then offered a stiff drive through the lane to finish well. BOLD LEADERSHIP dwelt a bit at the start, rushed up to regain contact with the field and improved his position at the end. FIT FAZE raced well off the pace for most of the way, then moved up along the outside. LUCKY FROLIC sprinted to the early lead, was engaged quickly after by KOPPER KILGOAR, dueled briefly with that one, held position for a half and faded in the upper stretch. CHOCOLATE NUT positioned near mid pack while along the rail and was empty late. SWIFT MERCEDES was boxed in heavy traffic early on, raced three wide to the turn and was unable to muster a rally. MY BUDDY RICHIE was void of early speed, raced between horses around the turn then had no response. T. D. VANCE failed to menace. RIGHT HAND MAN was up close early, gave way nearing the turn, raced four wide to the stretch and tired.

--------------  NEWS ITEM  ---------------

12/16/04 -  Bold Leadership and Tapalong are both entered to race at Calder Park this Saturday, 12/18. Tapalong is entered in the 3rd race which will be 6 furlongs on the dirt for 2yo Maiden Special Weight colts. It is the first start of his career and Barclay Tagg believes he is ready to give his best. The competition might be tough with a $700k yearling by Fusaichi Pegasus making his first start in this race but we're confident he doesn't know he's worth that much. Bold Leadership is entered in the 7th race which is an Allowance for 2yos which haven't won a race other than maiden or claiming. It's a 7 furlong race on the dirt and he looks like he fits well here. Here's hoping that they both like the track and run good races.

--------------  NEWS ITEM  ---------------

11/24/04 -  Bold Leadership and Tapalong both breezed today on the main track at Belmont Park. It was the first work for BL since breaking his maiden and he went an easy four furlongs in 51 3/5ths. Tapalong went a sharper 5 furlongs in 1:02. The track was slow after the rains and the persistent drizzle. Barclay Tagg was pleased with both and expects that they will get their next starts in Florida. The plan is to ship both 2yos to Gulfstream Park on Sunday (11/28/04) if the barns are ready. Since GP doesn't open until January, both horses may start in December at Calder which is nearby.

--------------  NEWS ITEM  ---------------

11/15/04 -  Bold Leadership won his first time out going 6 furlongs in a NJ-bred MSW during the last evening of the Meadowlands meet. He broke a little slowly giving most of the field 3-4 lengths right at the start, but Jose Velez urged him to get into the race and he responded by picking up horses one at a time. He reached the lead by the 1/2-mile mark and responded well down the stretch to win by 2 3/4 lengths in 1:11 4/5ths on a good track. Other than the start (which looked like it surpised him), Bold Leadership was professional in every other way from paddock to winner's circle. He came back untired which gives us hope that he can go further than 6 furlongs. He paid $22.20 to win.

11/12/04 -  Serene Valor has been retired. Unable to break her maiden going short or long on the dirt or the turf even at the lowest claiming levels for maidens, we elected to retire Serene while she was still healthy and sound. After cooling out at a local riding stable for a few months she will become a pleasure horse for Keith Nowak of Navesink. He is an experienced rider and we're sure she will get tender loving care. Good luck Keith! We will periodically let our fans know how she's doing.

--------------  NEWS ITEM  ---------------

11/11/04 - McSwoosh and Northern Tales continue to improve with therapy and we're looking forward to their return to training by the end of the year. McSwoosh has completed two of three treatments of Shock Wave Therapy to his shins. After his third treatment later this month he will be turned out for a month, have the affected limb xeroradiographed at the NJ Equine Center, and, if the bone has healed, he will be shipped to Florida to begin training. Northern Tales is recuperating from surgery on both knees to remove bone chips. Having completed two weeks of stall rest, she is being hand walked for two weeks and then she will be turned on a daily basis. We are hopeful that she will be ready for light training early next year if the prognosis permits it.

10/15/04 -  Spruce Run ran a strong race in the Grade 3 Cliff Hanger at Meadowlands tonight. Having the disadvantage of an outside post, Eibar Coa had him break alertly and go to the front to gain a favorable position going into the first. He held the lead into the stretch and battled gallantly down the lane only to lose by 1-1/2 lengths in finishing fifth. The full chart of the race is provided below. Post race, it was decided to give Spruce some time off in Florida and put him back into training in December to prepare for the winter meet at Gulfstream.
