TRAINERS

LINDA RICE (Please click to visit her website)

Having grown up in the business with her father, mother and three brothers, it was only natural for Linda Rice to gravitate toward racehorses. Starting out as an exercise rider and then progressing to become an assistant trainer with her father, Linda finally decided to get her trainer's license in 1987 after studying computer science at Penn State University. Initially, Linda campaigned her horses in Pennsylvania and New Jersey where she showed an uncanny ability to win with two-year olds at first asking. After displaying considerable success at this level, in 1991 Linda moved her main stable to the New York circuit and added satellites at the New Jersey tracks for the spring-fall season and in Florida for the winter months. Linda's capable assistant, Samantha Randazzo, has managed the satellite stable for the past few years with excellent results. Both Linda and Sam possess the same desirable qualities: a strong desire to win and an outstanding work ethic to ensure that their clients get to the winner's circle.

Linda has demonstrated her competence as a top trainer with a winning percentage of over 17% of starters and earnings in excess of $16 million from only 2800 starters. Although Linda has accumulated most her earnings to date in dirt races, more recently she has been quite successful with grass runners going both long and short. Over the years, Golden Dome Stable has had a number of successful horses under Linda's care including multiple stakes winner Spruce Run, Wichita Lineman, Stormy Day, and Electrick City among others.

Linda has also been very successful for other owners having saddled Grade 1 winners City Zip (Hopeful Stakes), Things Change (Spinaway Stakes), and Tenski (QE II Challenge Cup) and several graded stakes winners like Double Booked, Rapid Selection, Soldier Field, The Silver Move, Twilight Time, Prairie Princess, Quick Blue, and Lucifer's Stone.

Linda has recently been elected to the Board of Directors for the New York Thoroughbred Horsemen's Association and is recognized as one of the most prominent woman trainers in the country. Here's hoping that she wins one of the Classics with a Golden Dome horse.

BARCLAY TAGG

It wasn't until the last few years and the emergence of Funny Cide as the Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner in 2003 that Barclay Tagg began to get the notoriety as a top tier trainer which had long been due him. But it was his competence as a horsemen, great work ethic, and frank honesty and not his lay press popularity which attracted Golden Dome Stable to select him as a trainer for their horses.

Barclay is a Pennsylvania native who graduated from Penn State with a degree in animal science. After a stint as a steeplechase rider, he began training thoroughbreds under the watchful eye of, among others, Hall of Famer Frank Whitely, who trained classic winners Forego, Damascus, and Ruffian to name a few.

Since starting out on his own in 1976, Barclay has compiled a solid career record, winning over 1000 races from 6000 starts (17%) for purse earnings in excess of $25 million mostly on the Maryland circuit in the early days but more recently in NY and Florida. In addition to Funny Cide, he has trained Grade 1 stakes winners Island Fashion, Miss Josh and Royal Mountain Inn and could count 5 stakes winners in his barn during the 2003 season alone.

Even though Barclay will humbly minimize his racing accomplishments, he is lavish with his praise for all of his staff. In particular, he can't give enough credit to his assistant, Robin Smullen, who is an experienced horsewoman in her own right and has doubled as an exercise rider for Funny Cide during his championship campaign.

Funny Cide may have been the first New York bred horse to win the Kentucky Derby, but Golden Dome Stable feels that a New Jersey bred trained by Barclay Tagg is not too far in the distant future. As Barclay is known to say "All we need is speed and a lot of luck."

JIM RYERSON

Year in and year out Jim Ryerson can be found among the top trainers on the New Jersey circuit. After the Monmouth and Meadowlands meets, he sends his horses to either New York or Florida for their winter campaign. Overall, Jim won with a very creditable 18% of starters in 2003; he recorded 6 stakes wins with Jersey Giant and Tangier Sound; and, he was in the money two-thirds of the time when he saddled horses for graded stakes.

In addition to his fine record, Golden Dome Stable has selected Jim to be one of its trainers because of his sincerity and commitment to do what's best for the horses in his care, even if it means inconveniencing himself a little. Jim also has a genuine love for the sport of horseracing and this is shared by his capable staff and many of the owners who actively participate with him.

Jim worked his way up through the ranks; first starting out as a hot walker with Les Lear in the 60s, then as a assistant to John Tammaro III, before venturing out on his own in 1977. Ever since, Jim has trained for a series of dedicated owners including Art and Jeanette Toman, John E. Seker, the Pivnick's of Aliyuee Ben J Stable, Ernie Paragallo, Al and Noreen Carpenito, Joel Kligman, and Bob and Faith Hahn of Conover Stable, in addition to Golden Dome Stable.

Joan's Button was the first of his many stakes winners, which have included Just a Cat (who won the Grade 2 Cowdin) and Meadow Flight (who won the G3 Flamingo and G2 Pennsylvania Derby and placed in Monmouth Park's G1 Haskell Invitational to classic champion Holy Bull). Unbridled's Song, who won among other graded stakes the G1 Breeder's Cup Juvenile, the G1 Florida Derby, and the G2 Wood Memorial, was one of the more notable horses trained by Jim. Both Meadow Flight and Unbridled's Song have run in the Kentucky Derby so Jim's been to the big show and we hope he returns successfully real soon.

Jim lives near Monmouth Park with his wife, Susan, and three children, Jamie, Chris, and Kaitlin.
